Verified, never assumed
A LIVE badge requires an active broadcast reported by the YouTube Data API with no end time. Poster frames, channel names and visual clues are editorial context, not status evidence.

About the project
Japan Live View is an editorial guide to public camera feeds from Japan — built around a simple idea: a live label should mean something.
Why we built it
Japan is best understood slowly — one street, one coastline, one changing sky at a time.
Live cameras offer something a photograph cannot: the weather that actually arrived today, the light at this hour, the small movements of a place going about its business. We wanted to collect those windows into one calm, carefully labelled guide.
The site pairs each feed with regional and seasonal context, so a camera is a starting point rather than the whole story. Explore Hokkaido's snow country, the Seto Inland Sea or a Tokyo crossing — then follow the thread into the travel guide.
We are not affiliated with YouTube or with any camera operator. All video remains on YouTube, under the control of the channel that publishes it. Feeds can end, move or become private without notice, and our status system is designed to say so plainly.
Our standards
A LIVE badge requires an active broadcast reported by the YouTube Data API with no end time. Poster frames, channel names and visual clues are editorial context, not status evidence.
A camera without a verified location keeps the title “Location unknown” and the region “Region unknown”. We would rather publish less than invent a place name.
Video is embedded through YouTube's own IFrame Player API. Japan Live View does not host, download, transcode or re-stream any feed, and every camera links back to its source.
Status model
Every camera carries one of five states. Only one of them is ever allowed to say live.
